Why So Many Women Over 35 Experience Bloating and Digestive Discomfort

Many women find that foods they once tolerated well now trigger symptoms. This isn't imagined. Carbohydrate malabsorption, particularly of fructose and lactose is common and can worsen with age or changes in gut flora. Fructans, found in wheat, onions, and garlic, are another frequent culprit. These poorly absorbed sugars draw water into the colon and are fermented by gut bacteria, producing gas and distension.

Visceral Hypersensitivity: When Your Gut Overreacts

Some women develop heightened sensitivity in the nerves lining the gut, a phenomenon called visceral hypersensitivity. Strategies that make a real difference include mindful eating habits, stress management techniques, identifying and reducing dietary triggers, supporting gut health through diverse whole foods and carminatives, physiotherapy to strengthen digestion, balancing hormones and working with a practitioner who understands the hormonal and digestive connection.
