Why So Many Women Over 35 Experience Bloating and Digestive Discomfort

Woman bloated

If you're a woman over 35 and feel like bloating has become a near-daily companion, you're far from alone. Functional gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating, fullness, and abdominal discomfort are significantly more common in women than men and they tend to intensify during the mid-30s and beyond. Understanding why can be the first step toward finding real relief.  Digestion and the health of the gut microbiome are key components to addressing bloating.  That said there are many other factors that could be contributing.  Lets take a look at a few.

Hormones Play a Bigger Role Than You Think

Estrogen and progesterone don't just regulate your cycle, they directly influence how your gut moves, how sensitive it is, and even the composition of your gut microbiome. As hormone levels begin to shift in the years leading up to perimenopause, many women notice changes in digestion they've never experienced before.

Declining estrogen can slow gut motility, meaning food moves more sluggishly through the digestive tract. This can lead to constipation, gas buildup, and that uncomfortable "heavy" feeling after meals. Estrogen also helps maintain the protective lining of the gut, so when levels drop, the intestinal barrier may become more vulnerable, a factor increasingly linked to bloating and food sensitivities.

Stress Compounds the Problem

Life in your mid-30s and beyond often comes with mounting responsibilities such as career demands, caregiving, financial pressures. Chronic stress activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which triggers a cascade of effects on the gut: altered motility, increased intestinal permeability, shifts in the gut microbiome, and heightened visceral sensitivity. In other words, stress can literally make your gut more reactive and uncomfortable.

The gut-brain connection is bidirectional, meaning digestive distress can also worsen anxiety and mood creating a cycle that's hard to break without addressing both sides.

Food Sensitivities Can Shift Over Time

Many women find that foods they once tolerated well now trigger symptoms. This isn't imagined. Carbohydrate malabsorption, particularly of fructose and lactose is common and can worsen with age or changes in gut flora. Fructans, found in wheat, onions, and garlic, are another frequent culprit. These poorly absorbed sugars draw water into the colon and are fermented by gut bacteria, producing gas and distension.

A variety of approaches are available to help identify personal triggers such as food intolerance analysis, food sensitivity testing, and customized elimination challenge.

Visceral Hypersensitivity: When Your Gut Overreacts

Some women develop heightened sensitivity in the nerves lining the gut, a phenomenon called visceral hypersensitivity. Even normal amounts of gas or intestinal movement can register as pain or bloating. This is a hallmark of conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which disproportionately affects women.

What You Can Do

The good news is that underlying causes can be identified to help correct bloating. Strategies that make a real difference include mindful eating habits, stress management techniques, identifying and reducing dietary triggers, supporting gut health through diverse whole foods and carminatives, physiotherapy to strengthen digestion, balancing hormones and working with a practitioner who understands the hormonal and digestive connection.

You don't have to accept bloating as "just part of getting older." With the right holitics and integrative approach, relief is absolutely within reach.  Don't wait, take steps to build health today.
