Holistic Healthcare: The Principle of Holism Applied to Your Health

Squooshed Herbal Teacup 1

Welcome to Prairie Naturopathic! Whether you’re here for help with a specific health concern, or just curious about holistic healthcare in general, we’re so glad you’ve found us.

Naturopathic medicine is based on the principle of holism, which means that all aspects of a system are interconnected. Specifically, in regards to a person’s health, one body system affects another, and each body system is best understood in relation to the whole person.

Our providers seek to treat each individual rather than each disease, in contrast to conventional medical practice. You are a person, not an illness.

Our patients seek the knowledge and understanding of how each aspect of their lives can affect their health, either positively or negatively, and how to make lifestyle adjustments in concert with focused therapy to improve overall health.

As a patient in our practice, we analyze all aspects of your life, such as:

  • Are you under stress?
  • What are your sleep habits?
  • What does your diet typically look like?
  • How is your digestion?
  • Do you take any vitamins or supplements?
  • How is your mood/mental health?
  • How much do you exercise?
  • What’s going on with your hormones?
  • Could any part of your daily environment be affecting your health?

Our goal is to identify the root causes of symptoms in order to achieve deeper healing and optimal health. We assess each whole person—body, mind, and spirit—with the hopes of removing obstacles to healing and empowering our patients to take control of their health and wellness.

The holistic healthcare system utilizes both ancient and modern scientific ways of assessing and treating people.

You may be familiar with some of our common therapies, tools, and solutions:

  • Botanical medicine (aka herbal medicine)
  • Dietary changes
  • Vitamins/Minerals/Glandulars
  • Organ activation therapy (aka Naturopathic Physiotherapy)
  • Colonics
  • Sauna
  • Visceral Manipulation
  • Essential oils/Aromatherapy
  • Gut health assessment and healing measures
  • Thyroid assessment/therapy
  • Mental health assessment/therapy
  • Cardiometabolic assessment/therapy
  • Physical Activity Evaluation/changes in exercise regimen

What does the holistic approach look like in practice?

Squooshedwater Drop 1Imagine that a patient comes to our office with complaints of dizziness and headaches. Rather than sending him straight to the pharmacy with a prescription for the treatment of migraines, we will try to determine the root causes of the symptoms.

We might begin with an assessment of the patient’s diet, to determine whether particular foods are triggering inflammation. We will consider whether stress in his life is causing muscle tension in his neck and back. We will determine whether he grinds his teeth, resulting in jaw pain. Perhaps he is not getting decent sleep at night. Does his eyeglasses prescription need an update? Is he in need of supplemental vitamins or minerals? Is he staying hydrated throughout the day? Is he digesting properly to adequately nourish his body? Is he effectively eliminating through daily bowel movements?

The point of this well-rounded, whole-person assessment is to determine whether addressing the root causes with natural medicine, such as a monthly Naturopathic visit, coupled with therapy, a customized botanical formula, a few choice mineral supplements, and a focus on drinking enough water daily, will actually heal the root problem and prevent the need for suppressing symptoms with pharmaceutical medication.

Our patients appreciate the personalized care they receive when they visit us here at Prairie Naturopathic Doctors. They understand that we are a team, working together to maintain their optimal level of health and wellness.

Holistic healthcare is becoming an increasingly preferred choice, as patients experience the satisfaction of being active participants in their own healing and wellness processes.

We invite you to stick around for more on holistic healthcare and how it can benefit you and your family. We are honored to be a part of your healthy lifestyle.
